Description
Sansa Stark, Game of Thrones.
(spoilers below)
This is my second digital painting of Sansa - more will come, because she's one of my favourite PoVs and characters (also because Sophie Turner is a preraphaelite beauty and a pleasure to paint).
Sansa's character is strongly associated with bird imagery in ASoIaF - Sandor Clegane calls her "little bird" (similarly, in the show Cersei calls her "little dove"). A caged bird is what she is in King's Landing; and when she escapes, she goes to the Eyrie. A falcon is House Arryn's sigil, a mockingbird is Littlefinger's.
Birds are sweet, pretty, harmless things, just made for cages; but birds (of prey) are also fierce, wild creatures, for which only sky is the limit. Birds symbolize purity, but also intelligence and wisdom: it's undeniable that Sansa is becoming wiser and savvier, and is learning the rules of the game of thrones by simply observing the masters. Ultimately, birds are a symbol of freedom, and I think (and hope) the Little Bird will free herself from her cages, and fly north.
